STRESS MANAGEMENT – LAUGH MORE

STRESS MANAGEMENT – LAUGH MORE

Many people have experienced that stress can quickly add up…

Often stress increases:

  • when we are short on sleep
  • been eating lousy
  • working too much
  • family meddling in our affairs
  •  web surfing
  • text messaging
  • multi-tasking
  • number of computer screen changes
  • too much caffeine
  • heavy traffic conditions
  • driving in rain or snow
  • large metro urban driving
  • jobs that are tedious
  • jobs requiring extreme attention concentration
  • certain jobs are more stressful than others
  • sports
  • have too many things to do in a day
  • travel
  • vacation
  • certain people create stress for you
  • situational stress
  • violent movies
  • horror movies
  • action or thriller movies
  • certain kinds of music
  • your own stressors that only affect you

If we incorporate laughter into our day and keep a sense of humor things usually go better. Studies have shown that laughter reduces stress.

Extended laughter of more than 10 minutes produces serotonin and dopamine that relaxes us.

So make it a point to laugh more!

Touching and laughing are critical for good human relationships, says Merv Neal, CEO of Laughter Yoga Australia. Source: News Limited

STRESSED workers fretting about workloads and redundancies are turning to feel good techniques once dismissed as barking mad.
A new study from Deakin University’s School of Psychology on the effects of laughter yoga – where even the most serious employees are reduced to hysterics – has found it has a real and positive effect on workplace wellbeing weeks after the sessions are finished.

Using validated psychological methods, workplace wellbeing and overall job satisfaction increased by about 6 per cent to 73 per cent.

Dr Melissa Weinberg, who works on the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, said getting even small increases in people’s natural levels of wellbeing is difficult so a change of this magnitude is significant.
This increase was measured three weeks after the sessions of people doing yoga breathing techniques and simulating laughter until they simply can’t stop.

The trials were conducted inside traditional office-based businesses.

With 420,000 Australians made redundant or retrenched in the 12 months to February this year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the move is part of a wider trend of employers looking for increasingly unorthodox ways to keep their staff happier and thus more productive.

Organizations such as Australia Post, accountancy giants KPMG, insurer AON and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission have all been involved in recent years.

Dr Weinberg – the study’s author – said laughter yoga had an immediate increase in mood – which is the primary driver of wellbeing.

“We saw an increase in the sense of optimism, sense of control and overall life satisfaction,” Dr Weinberg said.

“It had helped to facilitate the connection between people at work and made them feel more comfortable about being there.

“Just that the employers had done something to boost their workers’ wellbeing was also significant factor.

“Laughter Yoga is easy and everyone can do it. It works for people who have been going through a tough time and looking for a booster. We found an increased wellbeing for people who were already quite happy.”

Laughter Yoga CEO Merv Neal said he was laughed out of offices ten years ago as being insane, but things have changed.

“There is a huge need for anything in business – it doesn’t necessarily have to be laughter yoga – that helps employees manage the stress they are under at the moment,” he said.

“There are so many rules at work now that we are losing that social connection. Touching and laughing are critical for good human relationships.”

Laughter Yoga Helps Improve Business and Performance:

Workplace Stress
While there are many tools available for stress management, Laughter Yoga is a unique system that helps to reduce physical, mental and emotional stress at the same time. It works simultaneously both on body and mind. A research conducted in December 2006, on 50 IT professionals in Bangalore, India found a significant reduction in stress levels as shown by reduction in cortisol levels in saliva.

Improved Efficiency
At a given time, the performance depends upon mood and Laughter Yoga has the power to change the mood state within minutes by releasing neuro-peptides from the brain cells called endorphins. Science tells us that the brain needs 25% more oxygen than other body organs. Laughter Yoga increases the net supply of oxygen which helps in optimal performance and boosts energy levels.

Team Building

“People who laugh together, work together”

John Cleese, a renowned British comedian, once said during his visit to Mumbai that Laughter is a great connector of people. It breaks all hierarchies and is a force for democracy. Laughter Yoga has the ability to change the work environment drastically by making people happy and cheerful, bringing positive mental attitude, hope and optimism in the workforce. It also increases communication skills to help in team building.

Leadership Skills
A good leader is the one who has the ability to effectively get in touch with his emotions and understand those of the others. Laughter Yoga helps to connect with people in the workplace and bring an emotional balance. This is greatly helpful in achieving targets and accomplishing goals.

Innovation and Creativity
The most creative people in the world are children. The essence of Laughter Yoga system is to cultivate childlike playfulness. This playfulness stimulates the right brain activity which is the seat of creativity. This helps to generate new ideas and insights about workplace issues and problems.

Increasing Attention Span in HR Trainings
Human brain cannot concentrate for more than 90 minutes after which the attention span reduces. Even a 5-10 minute Laughter Yoga session can provide a great energy boost during long HR training sessions and conferences.

It helps to increase the attention span, enhance learning skills, concentration powers and potential.

Positive Work Environment
Job dissatisfaction and hostile work environment compel people to change jobs more frequently thus affecting productivity and profitability. Laughter Yoga creates positive energy and improves communication between people. The Bangalore study also confirmed the increase in positive emotions and decrease in negative emotions, thereby developing an emotional intelligence. This helps to create a more constructive work environment and ensures loyalty and commitment.

Motivation and Communication
For people working in front office and sales and marketing, Laughter Yoga helps to bring a smile on their face and generate good feelings within the body. This enhances their communication and motivational skills thus increasing their client base and customer satisfaction.

Health Benefits
The basic objective of every human being is to enjoy life, live in harmony with family and have lots of friends to connect with. But, one cannot enjoy life if one is sick. Laughter Yoga is a single exercise routine which brings physical, mental and social well being in a shortest period of time. People can feel the benefits from the very first session.

Ideal Exercise for Busy People
Dr. Kataria says that in his 30 years of experience in medicine, the two most common causes of ill health are wrong food habits and lack of exercise which leads to heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and many stress related illnesses.

Business people are very busy and have no time to exercise. Dr. Williams Fry of Stanford University proved that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is equal to 30 minutes on the rowing machine. This is not in term of muscular movements but a cardio pulmonary endurance. The purpose of all aerobic exercises is to stimulate heart rate, increase blood circulation, supply oxygen and remove waste products. If you do laughter exercises for 10 minutes you don’t have to run for 30 minutes you will get same benefits.

Oxford University Study Suggest Laughter Manages Pain

Laughter’s the best medicine suggests study

Science

14 Sep 11
Laughter
Oxford University

Having a good laugh with friends really does help us to deal with pain, suggests a new study. The international research team, led by Oxford University, found that when we laugh properly, as opposed to producing a polite titter, the physical exertion leaves us exhausted and thereby triggers the release of protective endorphins. These endorphins, one of the complex neuropeptide chemicals produced in the brain, manage pain and promote feelings of well being. According to the team’s research paper, published online in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, watching just 15 minutes of comedy with others increased the pain threshold by an average of about ten per cent.

The fact that only this type of laughter releases endorphins has probably evolved as a way of promoting socialising amongst humans, says the paper. It points out that many studies have already shown that laughter is 30 times more likely to occur if you are with others than when alone. The endorphin rush appears to be limited to a good belly laugh, shared with others.

The research paper makes an important distinction between relaxed, unforced laughter that creases the eyes, and polite laughter which does not reach the eyes. It concludes that when we laugh properly we produce a series of exhalations without drawing breath, an involuntary physical mechanism that is limited to humans and appears to trigger the release of endorphins. Laughter is important to other great apes too but they breathe in as well as out when they laugh, unlike humans.

The paper is based on more than ten years of research in which different experiments were staged to discover what determined our level of pain tolerance. Subjects were asked to watch TV clips or live staged shows, and their pain thresholds were measured before and after doing this using a number of different pain manipulations (ice-cold sleeves, pressure from a blood pressure cuff, and a painful, strenuous quad work-out).

The participants watched 15 minute clips from comedies like Mr Bean and Friends, and these were contrasted with clips on how to play golf or factual programmes, both designed to elicit a neutral response. In other experiments, they watched nature programmes designed to produce a positive, ‘feel-good’ quality; however, like the golf instruction clips, these did nothing to increase the pain threshold, suggesting that it is the endorphin-activating effects of laughter itself that is important, not just the feel-good factor.

Another experiment compared the pain thresholds of participants who had watched stand-up comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with those who sat through staged dramas. This experiment confirmed that the pain tolerance effect of shared laughter is not just something confined to the laboratory, but occurs in real life too.

Lead author Professor Robin Dunbar, Head of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford, said: ‘Very little research has been done into why we laugh and what role it plays in society. Using microphones, we were able to record each of the participants and found that in a comedy show, they laughed for about a third of the time, and their pain tolerance rose as a consequence. We think that it is the bonding effects of the endorphin rush that explain why laughter plays such an important role in our social lives.’

In both primates and humans, laughter has been found to play an important role, yet has received very little attention in academic literature. This latest paper supports other work by Professor Dunbar that suggests the importance of group activity in producing endorphins. A previous study by Professor Dunbar and Dr Emma Cohen found that members of a rowing team increased their pain tolerance by training as a group rather than as individuals. Other communal activities like music making, dancing and religious rituals have also been shown to create euphoric states which, according to some studies, can also be associated with the release of endorphins.

Laughter Yoga is a system of moderate exercise combined with yogic breathing and laughter (fake or real) that delivers such results. Sustained laughter is maintained with Laughter Exercises that promote proper body responses that helps release these endorphins. Also Laughter Meditation is a favorite to do so.

Most Laughter Sessions last 30 – 45 minutes with some longer. Group Laughing, Playing, Singing and Dancing, Miming form the exercises.

Laughter Helps Reduce Stress and Builds The Immune System

We sight on this website under BENEFITS menu that many scientific studies suggest that laughter:

    Laughter Yoga Reduces Mental Stress

Our Breathing is connected to the state of our Mind. It is apparent that the state of our Mind directly affects our Breathing. When in a Stressful, Emotional state or turmoil, the Breathing Pattern alters drastically. It becomes faster, shallow and irregular. Sometimes people even hold their breath under Stress, which leads to an accumulation of Carbon dioxide in the blood.

Mental Stress occurs due to the arousal of Sympathetic branch of our Autonomic Nervous System, which is very sensitive to Carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Laughter Yoga provides an excellent Cardiac workout, and triggers a Breathing Pattern that offers significant respiratory benefits. It lowers the amount of residual air in the lungs, replacing it with Oxygen-rich air. This reduces the level of Carbon dioxide in the lungs, and prevents the Stress Arousal System.

    Diaphragmatic Breathing

The best way to reduce Mental Stress is to activate Parasympathetic System which is opposite of Sympathetic System. This can be done by changing the way we breathe. If we can learn to breathe from the Diaphragm, Mental Stress cannot occur, even if you have Stressful thoughts in your Mind. Your body simply will not react to Stressful thoughts.

The Diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscular partition between the Chest and the Abdomen. It plays an important role in the most vital function of Respiration. During Inhalation, the Diaphragm contracts, and pulls down, to make space for the lungs to expand, and during Exhalation, it relaxes and pushes the lungs to facilitate Exhalation.

By shifting the Breathing Pattern from shallow to deep Diaphragmatic Breathing, it stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which is the cooling branch of the Autonomic Nervous System, and is the opposite of the Sympathetic Stress Arousal System. This scientific phenomenon coupled with the ancient Yogic wisdom of Breathing, makes this concept a unique exercise regime to loosen Stress and relieve Anxiety.

    Laughter Yoga

One of the prime objectives of Laughter Yoga is to learn how to move the Diaphragm, and shift the awareness of Breathing from the chest to the Deep Abdominal Breathing. With the movement of the Diaphragm, we can bring our emotions under conscious control. Laughter helps this process. The Laughter Meditation practiced at the end of each session helps in a much deeper way with this exchange of oxygen with alternative periods of laughter and silent breathing meditation. It also grounds the energy and the individual.

Laughter is most effectively used in Laughter Yoga, which is the fastest growing health and fitness exercise routine. Thousands of practitioners around the world have reported remarkable improvement in health conditions. Based on unconditional laughter, it does not rely on humor or comedy, which makes it the easiest and the simplest exercise to rejuvenate the body mind system. Laughter Yoga embraces laughter for no reason at all. Attendees/Devotees choose to laugh.

Physiological Healing Power Of Laughter Yoga

Weak immune system: The weakening of the immune system due to physical illness or mental stress and depression undermines health and leads to frequent infections and disease.

Regular practice of Laughter Yoga boosts the immune system. Laughter increases the natural killer cells that have the ability to destroy tumors and viruses. It increases disease-destroying antibodies and also increases the concentration of salivary immunoglobulin A, which defends against the entry of infectious organisms through the respiratory tract. Laughter Yoga basically brings balance to all the components of the immune system and heals the pain.

Oxygen: Oxygen is one of the primary catalysts for biological energy in the human body. Stress reduces breathing and starves the body of oxygen, promoting the spread of illness. Laughter Yoga flushes the lungs and fully oxygenates the blood and major organs leaving one bursting with energy and vitality and free from disease.

Research has also shown that cancer cells are destroyed in the presence of oxygen. In fact, many parasites and bacteria don’t survive well in the presence of oxygen; therefore an increase in the oxygen levels with laughter exercises is a great way to combat certain killer diseases.

1989 STUDY

The mirthful laughter experience appears to reduce serum levels of cortisol, dopac, epinephrine, and growth hormone.
These biochemical changes have implications for the reversal of the neuroendocrine and classical stress hormone response.

ABSTRACT

Positive emotional activities have been suggested as modifiers of neuroendocrine hormones involved in the classical stress response. To detect changes in these components during a mirthful laughter experience, the authors studied 10 healthy male subjects. Five experimental subjects viewed a 60 minute humor video and five control subjects did not. Serial blood samples were measured for corticotropin (ACTH), cortisol, beta-endorphin, 3,4-dihydrophenylacetic acid (dopac)–the major serum neuronal catabolite of dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone, and prolactin. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that cortisol and dopac in the experimental group decreased more rapidly from baseline than the control group (p = 0.011, p = 0.025, respectively). Epinephrine levels in the experimental group were significantly lower than the control at all time points (p = 0.017). Growth hormone levels in the experimental group significantly increased during baseline (p = 0.027) and then decreased with laughter intervention (p less than 0.0005), whereas, the controls did not change over time (p = 0.787). ACTH, beta-endorphin, prolactin, and norepinephrine levels did not significantly increase. The mirthful laughter experience appears to reduce serum levels of cortisol, dopac, epinephrine, and growth hormone. These biochemical changes have implications for the reversal of the neuroendocrine and classical stress hormone response.
