Oxford University Study Suggest Laughter Manages Pain

Laughter’s the best medicine suggests study

Science

14 Sep 11
Laughter
Oxford University

Having a good laugh with friends really does help us to deal with pain, suggests a new study. The international research team, led by Oxford University, found that when we laugh properly, as opposed to producing a polite titter, the physical exertion leaves us exhausted and thereby triggers the release of protective endorphins. These endorphins, one of the complex neuropeptide chemicals produced in the brain, manage pain and promote feelings of well being. According to the team’s research paper, published online in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, watching just 15 minutes of comedy with others increased the pain threshold by an average of about ten per cent.

The fact that only this type of laughter releases endorphins has probably evolved as a way of promoting socialising amongst humans, says the paper. It points out that many studies have already shown that laughter is 30 times more likely to occur if you are with others than when alone. The endorphin rush appears to be limited to a good belly laugh, shared with others.

The research paper makes an important distinction between relaxed, unforced laughter that creases the eyes, and polite laughter which does not reach the eyes. It concludes that when we laugh properly we produce a series of exhalations without drawing breath, an involuntary physical mechanism that is limited to humans and appears to trigger the release of endorphins. Laughter is important to other great apes too but they breathe in as well as out when they laugh, unlike humans.

The paper is based on more than ten years of research in which different experiments were staged to discover what determined our level of pain tolerance. Subjects were asked to watch TV clips or live staged shows, and their pain thresholds were measured before and after doing this using a number of different pain manipulations (ice-cold sleeves, pressure from a blood pressure cuff, and a painful, strenuous quad work-out).

The participants watched 15 minute clips from comedies like Mr Bean and Friends, and these were contrasted with clips on how to play golf or factual programmes, both designed to elicit a neutral response. In other experiments, they watched nature programmes designed to produce a positive, ‘feel-good’ quality; however, like the golf instruction clips, these did nothing to increase the pain threshold, suggesting that it is the endorphin-activating effects of laughter itself that is important, not just the feel-good factor.

Another experiment compared the pain thresholds of participants who had watched stand-up comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with those who sat through staged dramas. This experiment confirmed that the pain tolerance effect of shared laughter is not just something confined to the laboratory, but occurs in real life too.

Lead author Professor Robin Dunbar, Head of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford, said: ‘Very little research has been done into why we laugh and what role it plays in society. Using microphones, we were able to record each of the participants and found that in a comedy show, they laughed for about a third of the time, and their pain tolerance rose as a consequence. We think that it is the bonding effects of the endorphin rush that explain why laughter plays such an important role in our social lives.’

In both primates and humans, laughter has been found to play an important role, yet has received very little attention in academic literature. This latest paper supports other work by Professor Dunbar that suggests the importance of group activity in producing endorphins. A previous study by Professor Dunbar and Dr Emma Cohen found that members of a rowing team increased their pain tolerance by training as a group rather than as individuals. Other communal activities like music making, dancing and religious rituals have also been shown to create euphoric states which, according to some studies, can also be associated with the release of endorphins.

Laughter Yoga originated back in March of 1995 in India by Dr. Kataria and his wife Madhuri and three friends.

Fast forward and there are over 6,000 Laughter Clubs in over 60 Countries and it is here in Atlanta, GA.

Laughter Yoga is a form of moderate fun exercise, combined with yogic breathing and laughter. No Yoga Poses to learn. No special clothes or mats or shoes.
Attendees wear their usual clothes and come with an open mind and embrace a 45 minute session. About 30 minutes of Laughter exercises that produces serotonin and dopamine that makes the participant feel better. Studies have told us that even 10 minutes of constant laughing is like rowing in a gym for 30 minutes.

It is 30 x easier to laugh in a group than alone.

The thing is… we need sustained laughter to produce this effect. Movies and TV only produces very short bursts of laughter so is not the same thing. Movies and TV are helpful to boost one’s mood but Laughter Yoga is the process that gets real results you feel and creates feelings of JOY, HAPPINESS, CONNECTIVENESS, WELL-BEING, IMPROVED HEALTH, ALLEVIATES OUR ABOVE MENTIONED NEGATIVE FEELINGS.

Laughter Helps Reduce Stress and Builds The Immune System

We sight on this website under BENEFITS menu that many scientific studies suggest that laughter:

  • boosts the immune system, liberates interleukin 2

  • reduces anxiety

  • increases antibodies in saliva that combats upper respiratory infections

  • releases stress, by decreasing cortisol serum level

    Laughter Yoga Reduces Mental Stress

Our Breathing is connected to the state of our Mind. It is apparent that the state of our Mind directly affects our Breathing. When in a Stressful, Emotional state or turmoil, the Breathing Pattern alters drastically. It becomes faster, shallow and irregular. Sometimes people even hold their breath under Stress, which leads to an accumulation of Carbon dioxide in the blood.

Mental Stress occurs due to the arousal of Sympathetic branch of our Autonomic Nervous System, which is very sensitive to Carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Laughter Yoga provides an excellent Cardiac workout, and triggers a Breathing Pattern that offers significant respiratory benefits. It lowers the amount of residual air in the lungs, replacing it with Oxygen-rich air. This reduces the level of Carbon dioxide in the lungs, and prevents the Stress Arousal System.

    Diaphragmatic Breathing

The best way to reduce Mental Stress is to activate Parasympathetic System which is opposite of Sympathetic System. This can be done by changing the way we breathe. If we can learn to breathe from the Diaphragm, Mental Stress cannot occur, even if you have Stressful thoughts in your Mind. Your body simply will not react to Stressful thoughts.

The Diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscular partition between the Chest and the Abdomen. It plays an important role in the most vital function of Respiration. During Inhalation, the Diaphragm contracts, and pulls down, to make space for the lungs to expand, and during Exhalation, it relaxes and pushes the lungs to facilitate Exhalation.

By shifting the Breathing Pattern from shallow to deep Diaphragmatic Breathing, it stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which is the cooling branch of the Autonomic Nervous System, and is the opposite of the Sympathetic Stress Arousal System. This scientific phenomenon coupled with the ancient Yogic wisdom of Breathing, makes this concept a unique exercise regime to loosen Stress and relieve Anxiety.

    Laughter Yoga

One of the prime objectives of Laughter Yoga is to learn how to move the Diaphragm, and shift the awareness of Breathing from the chest to the Deep Abdominal Breathing. With the movement of the Diaphragm, we can bring our emotions under conscious control. Laughter helps this process. The Laughter Meditation practiced at the end of each session helps in a much deeper way with this exchange of oxygen with alternative periods of laughter and silent breathing meditation. It also grounds the energy and the individual.

Laughter is most effectively used in Laughter Yoga, which is the fastest growing health and fitness exercise routine. Thousands of practitioners around the world have reported remarkable improvement in health conditions. Based on unconditional laughter, it does not rely on humor or comedy, which makes it the easiest and the simplest exercise to rejuvenate the body mind system. Laughter Yoga embraces laughter for no reason at all. Attendees/Devotees choose to laugh.

Physiological Healing Power Of Laughter Yoga

Weak immune system: The weakening of the immune system due to physical illness or mental stress and depression undermines health and leads to frequent infections and disease.

Regular practice of Laughter Yoga boosts the immune system. Laughter increases the natural killer cells that have the ability to destroy tumors and viruses. It increases disease-destroying antibodies and also increases the concentration of salivary immunoglobulin A, which defends against the entry of infectious organisms through the respiratory tract. Laughter Yoga basically brings balance to all the components of the immune system and heals the pain.

Oxygen: Oxygen is one of the primary catalysts for biological energy in the human body. Stress reduces breathing and starves the body of oxygen, promoting the spread of illness. Laughter Yoga flushes the lungs and fully oxygenates the blood and major organs leaving one bursting with energy and vitality and free from disease.

Research has also shown that cancer cells are destroyed in the presence of oxygen. In fact, many parasites and bacteria don’t survive well in the presence of oxygen; therefore an increase in the oxygen levels with laughter exercises is a great way to combat certain killer diseases.

1989 STUDY

The mirthful laughter experience appears to reduce serum levels of cortisol, dopac, epinephrine, and growth hormone.
These biochemical changes have implications for the reversal of the neuroendocrine and classical stress hormone response.

Type: Journal Article

ABSTRACT

Positive emotional activities have been suggested as modifiers of neuroendocrine hormones involved in the classical stress response. To detect changes in these components during a mirthful laughter experience, the authors studied 10 healthy male subjects. Five experimental subjects viewed a 60 minute humor video and five control subjects did not. Serial blood samples were measured for corticotropin (ACTH), cortisol, beta-endorphin, 3,4-dihydrophenylacetic acid (dopac)–the major serum neuronal catabolite of dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone, and prolactin. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that cortisol and dopac in the experimental group decreased more rapidly from baseline than the control group (p = 0.011, p = 0.025, respectively). Epinephrine levels in the experimental group were significantly lower than the control at all time points (p = 0.017). Growth hormone levels in the experimental group significantly increased during baseline (p = 0.027) and then decreased with laughter intervention (p less than 0.0005), whereas, the controls did not change over time (p = 0.787). ACTH, beta-endorphin, prolactin, and norepinephrine levels did not significantly increase. The mirthful laughter experience appears to reduce serum levels of cortisol, dopac, epinephrine, and growth hormone. These biochemical changes have implications for the reversal of the neuroendocrine and classical stress hormone response.
