WHAT: Laughter Yoga (LY) is light exercise needing no special cloths, no equipment, no poses to learn. We laugh for no reason because we can. Laughter Yoga (LY) is a form of exercise to improve health, happiness and joy. Research and seventeen years of experience shows the body cannot tell the difference from fake laughter and real laughter. The laughter becomes contagious in a group and soon the stress oozes away. The more you engage, the more you get out of it.

WHAT YOU SEE: May look like a bunch of nuts laughing, pure craziness, but no one is allowed to just watch. You are asked to participate or wait outside or wait in the car. 17 years and 6000 laughter clubs in over 60 countries prove people have a great time and feel better coming as often as they can.

WHAT YOU MAY FEEL:  Silly, fun, child like playfulness, stupid, embarrassed, happy, joyful, happy, blissful, bright, warm inside, golden, halcyon, need to laugh more, don’t stop, riant, feeling mirth, infectious, cheerful, elated, joyous, bonded, sense of community, calm, peaceful, carefree, de-stressed, relaxed, energized, psyched. HOW:

  • A brief introduction to Laughter Yoga
  • Go over five things to remember during the session
  • Then I tell and show what is going to happen. No reason to be nervous. It is all just plain fun.
  • We do some fun movements – no poses to memorize – you can choose to not do a certain movement – no new pain
  • We breathe, really breathe
  • We move
  • We clap
  • We chant some … HO, HO, HAA, HAA, HAA
  • And then laugh as best we can.
  • Things move along quickly so no one gets bored.
  • We usually do 10-12 different laughter exercises depending on time and group size.
  • You do not have to know anything about Yoga.
  • Most come in street clothes, or work clothes. A bathroom is available if you come straight from work and want to get casual. No yoga clothes are needed. Loose fitting clothes the best.
  • No mats, or special shoes. Some find they actually perspire.
  • We end with a Laughter Meditation like no other meditation you have ever done!
  • We get grounded
  • Then wrap up and done.

IF: Come with an open mind. The session is to help you leave your mind at the front door and to embrace child like playfulness and enjoy each moment for 45 minutes. If you do, you will find you have a great time and feel de-stressed and energized for the evening and the week ahead.

STRESSED workers fretting about workloads and redundancies are turning to feel good techniques once dismissed as barking mad.
A new study from Deakin University’s School of Psychology on the effects of laughter yoga – where even the most serious employees are reduced to hysterics – has found it has a real and positive effect on workplace wellbeing weeks after the sessions are finished.

Using validated psychological methods, workplace wellbeing and overall job satisfaction increased by about 6 per cent to 73 per cent.

Dr Melissa Weinberg, who works on the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, said getting even small increases in people’s natural levels of wellbeing is difficult so a change of this magnitude is significant.
This increase was measured three weeks after the sessions of people doing yoga breathing techniques and simulating laughter until they simply can’t stop.

The trials were conducted inside traditional office-based businesses.

With 420,000 Australians made redundant or retrenched in the 12 months to February this year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the move is part of a wider trend of employers looking for increasingly unorthodox ways to keep their staff happier and thus more productive.

Organizations such as Australia Post, accountancy giants KPMG, insurer AON and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission have all been involved in recent years.

Dr Weinberg – the study’s author – said laughter yoga had an immediate increase in mood – which is the primary driver of wellbeing.

“We saw an increase in the sense of optimism, sense of control and overall life satisfaction,” Dr Weinberg said.

“It had helped to facilitate the connection between people at work and made them feel more comfortable about being there.

“Just that the employers had done something to boost their workers’ wellbeing was also significant factor.

“Laughter Yoga is easy and everyone can do it. It works for people who have been going through a tough time and looking for a booster. We found an increased wellbeing for people who were already quite happy.”

Laughter Yoga CEO Merv Neal said he was laughed out of offices ten years ago as being insane, but things have changed.

“There is a huge need for anything in business – it doesn’t necessarily have to be laughter yoga – that helps employees manage the stress they are under at the moment,” he said.

“There are so many rules at work now that we are losing that social connection. Touching and laughing are critical for good human relationships.”

Today about one in eight Americans is older than 65 and this segment of the population is not only increasing, but also living longer than ever before.

Between 2010 and 2030 the number of adults older than 65 is expected to double, and life expectancy will be almost thirty years greater than a century ago. Worldwide, by the year 2050, the number of people older than 60 will outnumber children 14 years old and younger.

While advances in medicine and improvement in standards of living responsible for this change are all positive, what will these new found years mean for those who are living them, as well as the population as a whole? This question drives the research going on at the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife.

The mission of IFAR researchers is to maximize the functional potential and quality of life of adults as they age.

Institute for Aging Research

Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, the Institute for Aging Research is the largest gerontology and geriatrics research facility in the country based in a clinical setting.  Institute scientists work to discover the mechanisms of aging diseases and disability, which leads to the prevention, treatment and cure of disease, advances the standard of care for older people, and informs public decision-making. Their vision is to transform the human experience of aging by ensuring a life of health, dignity and productivity into advanced age.

From the Institute’s world-renowned musculoskeletal research, to the Aging Brain Center, to social research that measures the success of our systems of care at home and abroad, the Institute’s multidisciplinary aging research faculty, promotes scientific investigation that considers the complex relationship between biological, social and psychological factors that influence how well we can all live in old age now, and in the future.

Institute for Aging Research strength is the multidisciplinary nature of its faculty, which includes both social and medical research scientists.

Humor may be the best medicine against life’s trials and tribulations . . . but it may also have some health benefits, as well.

Experts at Hebrew SeniorLife say that humor-often in the form of a good, hearty laugh-can help the mind and body in several ways by:

  • Relieving physical tension and stress;
  • Boosting the immune system, including reducing stress hormones and increasing the activity of immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies;
  • Releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals; and

While scientists continue to study the health benefits of humor, studies have shown that we are 30 times more likely to laugh when we’re with other people. People who laugh a lot, researchers say, may just have a strong connection to the people around them, which, in itself, may have health benefits, including an improved quality of life. Abstract

AIM:

To investigate the effects of laughter therapy on depression, cognitive function, quality of life, and sleep of the elderly in a community.

METHODS:

Between July and September 2007, the total study sample consisted of 109 subjects aged over 65 divided into two groups; 48 subjects in the laughter therapy group and 61 subjects in the control group. The subjects in the laughter therapy group underwent laughter therapy four times over 1 month. We compared Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Short-Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) between the two groups before and after laughter therapy.

RESULTS:

There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. Before laughter therapy, the GDS scores were 7.98 ± 3.58 and 8.08 ± 3.96; the MMSE scores were 23.81 ± 3.90 and 22.74 ± 4.00; total scores of SF-36 were 54.77 ± 17.63 and 52.54 ± 21.31; the ISI scores were 8.00 ± 6.29 and 8.36 ± 6.38; the PSQI scores were 6.98 ± 3.41 and 7.38 ± 3.70 in laughter therapy group and control groups, respectively. After laughter therapy, the GDS scores were 6.94 ± 3.19 (P=0.027) and 8.43 ± 3.44 (P=0.422); the MMSE scores were 24.63 ± 3.53 (P=0.168) and 23.70 ± 3.85 (P=0.068); total scores of SF-36 were 52.24 ± 17.63 (P=0.347) and 50.32 ± 19.66 (P=0.392); the ISI scores were 7.58 ± 5.38 (P=0.327) and 9.31 ± 6.35 (P=0.019); the PSQI scores were 6.04 ± 2.35 (P=0.019) and 7.30 ± 3.74 (P=0.847) in both groups, respectively.

CONCLUSION:

Laughter Therapy is considered to be useful, cost-effective and easily-accessible intervention that has positive effects on depression, insomnia, and sleep quality in the elderly.

Oxford University Study Suggest Laughter Manages Pain

Having a good laugh with friends really does help us to deal with pain, suggests a new study. The international research team, led by Oxford University, found that when we laugh properly, as opposed to producing a polite titter, the physical exertion leaves us exhausted and thereby triggers the release of protective endorphins. These endorphins, one of the complex neuropeptide chemicals produced in the brain, manage pain and promote feelings of well being. According to the team’s research paper, published online in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, watching just 15 minutes of comedy with others increased the pain threshold by an average of about ten per cent.

The fact that only this type of laughter releases endorphins has probably evolved as a way of promoting socialising amongst humans, says the paper. It points out that many studies have already shown that laughter is 30 times more likely to occur if you are with others than when alone. The endorphin rush appears to be limited to a good belly laugh, shared with others.

The research paper makes an important distinction between relaxed, unforced laughter that creases the eyes, and polite laughter which does not reach the eyes. It concludes that when we laugh properly we produce a series of exhalations without drawing breath, an involuntary physical mechanism that is limited to humans and appears to trigger the release of endorphins. Laughter is important to other great apes too but they breathe in as well as out when they laugh, unlike humans.

The paper is based on more than ten years of research in which different experiments were staged to discover what determined our level of pain tolerance. Subjects were asked to watch TV clips or live staged shows, and their pain thresholds were measured before and after doing this using a number of different pain manipulations (ice-cold sleeves, pressure from a blood pressure cuff, and a painful, strenuous quad work-out).

The participants watched 15 minute clips from comedies like Mr Bean and Friends, and these were contrasted with clips on how to play golf or factual programmes, both designed to elicit a neutral response. In other experiments, they watched nature programmes designed to produce a positive, ‘feel-good’ quality; however, like the golf instruction clips, these did nothing to increase the pain threshold, suggesting that it is the endorphin-activating effects of laughter itself that is important, not just the feel-good factor.

Another experiment compared the pain thresholds of participants who had watched stand-up comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with those who sat through staged dramas. This experiment confirmed that the pain tolerance effect of shared laughter is not just something confined to the laboratory, but occurs in real life too.

Lead author Professor Robin Dunbar, Head of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford, said: ‘Very little research has been done into why we laugh and what role it plays in society. Using microphones, we were able to record each of the participants and found that in a comedy show, they laughed for about a third of the time, and their pain tolerance rose as a consequence. We think that it is the bonding effects of the endorphin rush that explain why laughter plays such an important role in our social lives.’

In both primates and humans, laughter has been found to play an important role, yet has received very little attention in academic literature. This latest paper supports other work by Professor Dunbar that suggests the importance of group activity in producing endorphins. A previous study by Professor Dunbar and Dr Emma Cohen found that members of a rowing team increased their pain tolerance by training as a group rather than as individuals. Other communal activities like music making, dancing and religious rituals have also been shown to create euphoric states which, according to some studies, can also be associated with the release of endorphins.

Laughter Yoga is a moderate fun filled form of exercise, combined with yogic breathing and laughter.

Contrary to popular belief, Laughter Yoga has proved that one does not need a sense of humor, to laugh. Laughter can be learnt and programmed into the body, to bring about a complete transformation. Research has proved that just 10-20 minutes of fake or real laughter has a profound benefit on the human body. To be most effective this should be done often, even daily if you are willing. It is generally believed that in the absence of humor, Laughter is almost unthinkable. But, we cannot always depend on a sense of humor to create laughter, since humor is a phenomenon of the Intellect, the Mind. Moreover, humor is unique to the individual, their culture, and it varies from person to person. There may be few reasons for us to smile and laugh, while there are many reasons for us to be sad, depressed and frustrated.

In fact, regular conditioning as we grow up, has led to undermining of emotional expression. If we notice, children are absolutely natural when they laugh. Their laughter is not dependent on any external stimulus like jokes, comedy or humor. Adults, on the other hand, learn the art of suppressing emotions for fear of being ridiculed or facing a conflict, which proves to be detrimental in the pursuit of physical and mental well being.

Laughter Yoga is a unique concept of Unconditional Laughter, according to this, anyone can Laugh for No Reason. It does not rely on jokes, humor or comedy. It initiates laughter as a form of an exercise in a group, and as the Laughter Sessions progress; Laughter becomes real and contagious.
