Dementia & Alzheimer’s Patients Benefit From Laugher Yoga

How Laughter Yoga Changed Me And Others With Dementia & Alzheimer’s

(Personal Story)

Jody Ross, Minnesota

After meeting several physicians for years trying to find an answer to my longstanding problem of a debilitating mood disorder, chronic pain & fatigue, I stumbled into a new way of being with Laughter Yoga.  I laughed, breathed & clapped, and felt a joy that I could savor – for hours! I called my dear friend shouting, “Guess what? I feel great! I have to do this. Everyone should have a chance to feel this way!”
This friend had faithfully listened to me for years as I described not only my physical problems, but also my emotional challenges as well. In the past year, I had lost four family members, one of whom died by homicide. I was filled with sorrow. I cried every day. He thought I sounded a bit crazy, but he was all for anything that would make me feel and sound as alive and happy, as I did after my Laughter session.

I attended the Iowa School of Laughter for my Laughter Yoga Leader certification. There I discovered that crying is not the only way to release sorrow. Deep belly laughs are a nice alternative. I stopped crying and noticed some important physical changes. My pain was reduced by 90%. I had more energy. What’s more, I began sleeping restfully for the first time in years.

My own journey with physical and emotional pain has been a blessing in my work doing Laughter Yoga with persons with Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. I know what it is like to want to participate in life to the fullest, but having limitations that make it impossible. In my first session at Lakeview Ranch in Darwin, Minnesota, an innovative facility for people who have Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia, I expected some would laugh and others would simply hang out and enjoy the positive feelings. But in spite of low expectations, all of 15 residents or so laughed!

One of the residents had decided she would not laugh, but very quickly, the contagious laughter won her over. She has become an enthusiastic member of the group. Residents who began the class unable to clap their hands suddenly started clapping enthusiastically. They had forgotten how to raise their hands over their head, and then, suddenly, they could do it. Many residents seemed irritated. At the end of the session, they couldn’t stop smiling. I’m told their happy mood continued throughout the day. One asked, “When can we do that again?”

Not only are the residents blessed by Laughter Yoga, but also their families. Often, families feel as though their relatives are gone. They’re in body only. The daughter of a resident, who was unable to speak with an expression seemingly frozen in a scowl, connected with her father, and they shared something positive for the first time in a long time.

Of course, Laughter Yoga is a marvelous boost for the staff at a dementia care facility. Their work is hard and thankless. Often, they must assist residents who do not want their help, and will fight not to be helped. Laughter Yoga allows them to connect in a positive way. As one staff member said, “I usually go home and crash on the couch when I get home from work, but today I think I will go home and clean my house.” Instead of feeling drained, she felt renewed.

I am continually inspired and amazed by the incredible results I see each time I work with people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. They don’t remember my name or what Laughter Yoga is, but as soon as we start, they pick up right where we left off. They remember the emotional connection. In fact, their enthusiasm grows with each session.

I am very thankful for my life – all of it. Everything I have experienced thus far, has made my work with these people possible. I feel so blessed to have a new way to live, and a renewed sense of purpose with Laughter Yoga.

About Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease

Dementia is a brain disorder of declining cognitive abilities. The likelihood of experiencing Dementia increases with advancing age. Alzheimer’s Disease is the major cause of dementia. The main symptoms are loss of memory, confusion, intellectual decline, depression and personality, disorientation and agitation. In advanced stages, the patient becomes incapable of performing even simple tasks of daily living. They become totally dependent upon others and need help round-the-clock.

Worldwide, with a new case every seven seconds, the number of Dementia patients is more than 24 millions worldwide. In India alone, 3.2 million people suffer from Dementia.

Laughter Yoga plays an important role in helping people suffering with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is ideally suited for such people because they cannot comprehend humor, due to lack of cognitive abilities. Therefore, when laughter in Laughter Yoga is done in the form of an exercise, it brings about the same health benefits.

Laughter Yoga helps to increase the net supply of oxygen to the brain cells thereby improving the brain functions. Also, by releasing certain chemicals from the brain, it helps to elevate the mood states, and lift depression. We also incorporate physical exercises to improve bodily functions. Laughter Yoga has been very well received in senior care centers, and people suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease have really benefited.

LAUGHTER YOGA WORKS IN BUSINESS

Laughter Yoga Works In Business For It’s Employees

Touching and laughing are critical for good human relationships, says Merv Neal, CEO of Laughter Yoga Australia. Source: News Limited

STRESSED workers fretting about workloads and redundancies are turning to feel good techniques once dismissed as barking mad.
A new study from Deakin University’s School of Psychology on the effects of laughter yoga – where even the most serious employees are reduced to hysterics – has found it has a real and positive effect on workplace wellbeing weeks after the sessions are finished.

Using validated psychological methods, workplace wellbeing and overall job satisfaction increased by about 6 per cent to 73 per cent.

Dr Melissa Weinberg, who works on the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, said getting even small increases in people’s natural levels of wellbeing is difficult so a change of this magnitude is significant.
This increase was measured three weeks after the sessions of people doing yoga breathing techniques and simulating laughter until they simply can’t stop.

The trials were conducted inside traditional office-based businesses.

With 420,000 Australians made redundant or retrenched in the 12 months to February this year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the move is part of a wider trend of employers looking for increasingly unorthodox ways to keep their staff happier and thus more productive.

Organizations such as Australia Post, accountancy giants KPMG, insurer AON and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission have all been involved in recent years.

Dr Weinberg – the study’s author – said laughter yoga had an immediate increase in mood – which is the primary driver of wellbeing.

“We saw an increase in the sense of optimism, sense of control and overall life satisfaction,” Dr Weinberg said.

“It had helped to facilitate the connection between people at work and made them feel more comfortable about being there.

“Just that the employers had done something to boost their workers’ wellbeing was also significant factor.

“Laughter Yoga is easy and everyone can do it. It works for people who have been going through a tough time and looking for a booster. We found an increased wellbeing for people who were already quite happy.”

Laughter Yoga CEO Merv Neal said he was laughed out of offices ten years ago as being insane, but things have changed.

“There is a huge need for anything in business – it doesn’t necessarily have to be laughter yoga – that helps employees manage the stress they are under at the moment,” he said.

“There are so many rules at work now that we are losing that social connection. Touching and laughing are critical for good human relationships.”

Laughter Yoga Helps Improve Business and Performance:

Workplace Stress
While there are many tools available for stress management, Laughter Yoga is a unique system that helps to reduce physical, mental and emotional stress at the same time. It works simultaneously both on body and mind. A research conducted in December 2006, on 50 IT professionals in Bangalore, India found a significant reduction in stress levels as shown by reduction in cortisol levels in saliva.

Improved Efficiency
At a given time, the performance depends upon mood and Laughter Yoga has the power to change the mood state within minutes by releasing neuro-peptides from the brain cells called endorphins. Science tells us that the brain needs 25% more oxygen than other body organs. Laughter Yoga increases the net supply of oxygen which helps in optimal performance and boosts energy levels.

Team Building

“People who laugh together, work together”

John Cleese, a renowned British comedian, once said during his visit to Mumbai that Laughter is a great connector of people. It breaks all hierarchies and is a force for democracy. Laughter Yoga has the ability to change the work environment drastically by making people happy and cheerful, bringing positive mental attitude, hope and optimism in the workforce. It also increases communication skills to help in team building.

Leadership Skills
A good leader is the one who has the ability to effectively get in touch with his emotions and understand those of the others. Laughter Yoga helps to connect with people in the workplace and bring an emotional balance. This is greatly helpful in achieving targets and accomplishing goals.

Innovation and Creativity
The most creative people in the world are children. The essence of Laughter Yoga system is to cultivate childlike playfulness. This playfulness stimulates the right brain activity which is the seat of creativity. This helps to generate new ideas and insights about workplace issues and problems.

Increasing Attention Span in HR Trainings
Human brain cannot concentrate for more than 90 minutes after which the attention span reduces. Even a 5-10 minute Laughter Yoga session can provide a great energy boost during long HR training sessions and conferences.

It helps to increase the attention span, enhance learning skills, concentration powers and potential.

Positive Work Environment
Job dissatisfaction and hostile work environment compel people to change jobs more frequently thus affecting productivity and profitability. Laughter Yoga creates positive energy and improves communication between people. The Bangalore study also confirmed the increase in positive emotions and decrease in negative emotions, thereby developing an emotional intelligence. This helps to create a more constructive work environment and ensures loyalty and commitment.

Motivation and Communication
For people working in front office and sales and marketing, Laughter Yoga helps to bring a smile on their face and generate good feelings within the body. This enhances their communication and motivational skills thus increasing their client base and customer satisfaction.

Health Benefits
The basic objective of every human being is to enjoy life, live in harmony with family and have lots of friends to connect with. But, one cannot enjoy life if one is sick. Laughter Yoga is a single exercise routine which brings physical, mental and social well being in a shortest period of time. People can feel the benefits from the very first session.

Ideal Exercise for Busy People
Dr. Kataria says that in his 30 years of experience in medicine, the two most common causes of ill health are wrong food habits and lack of exercise which leads to heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and many stress related illnesses.

Business people are very busy and have no time to exercise. Dr. Williams Fry of Stanford University proved that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is equal to 30 minutes on the rowing machine. This is not in term of muscular movements but a cardio pulmonary endurance. The purpose of all aerobic exercises is to stimulate heart rate, increase blood circulation, supply oxygen and remove waste products. If you do laughter exercises for 10 minutes you don’t have to run for 30 minutes you will get same benefits.
